Teaching Statement

I believe that teaching is a great pathway and a dynamic field for showcasing and guiding students to gain further knowledge, grow career-wise, and conduct research. I consider teaching to be not only about delivering knowledge but also about learning new perspectives from students. I truly value the insights of fresh mindsets and thoughts. The ways in which they think about theories, debate sociological topics, or relate sociological theories to their daily lives and communities are impressive. The real-life examples they bring are particularly valuable. I genuinely learn from and respect all students' thoughts, opinions, and perspectives, and I always encourage them to connect new ideas with the theories and topics we discuss.
Throughout my teaching, I aim to adopt a comprehensive approach that incorporates quizzes, exams, visual presentations, in-class activities, discussion posts, group projects, and more. As a teacher, I believe it is my responsibility to be approachable to students both in and out of the classroom, whether through office hours, email, or zoom.
From my perspective, an effective teacher is one who possesses expertise in and confidence with the topics and content of the course. Hence, I believe it is essential for teachers and educators to stay updated and attend various professional development activities, including research, workshops, conferences, symposiums, colloquiums, and other networking opportunities. This will enable them to gain fresh, up-to-date insights about their area of specialization and deliver the best content to their students.
In addition, I believe that maintaining a stress-free environment within the class is important. I want students to attend classes with passion and high interest. I want them to actively engage with the content and syllabus. Additionally, I aim for them to understand the topics deeply and be able to connect them to practical and societal contexts.
Overall, my teaching philosophy centers on the belief that the classroom is a reciprocal and mutual environment for learning, discovery, and growth for both students and me as a teacher. I believe that teaching extends beyond academic career growth; it also contributes to shaping both my and the students' personal and professional identities. Thus, I genuinely love teaching and it's been my passion for as long as I can remember.
